Accusation #6: AtkinsFacts.org Understates the Amount of Fiber in the Diet
A number of objectionable statements appear on the AtkinsFacts.org website regarding Atkins...
* In another instance, you report that the Induction Phase of the ANA [Atkins Diet] only provides two grams of fiber a day (page 13). This number was not calculated by doing an independent nutrient analysis based on the menus provided in Atkins' New Diet Revolution, and although reference is made to the 1999 edition of the book, nowhere does the book mention that only two grams of fiber are provided. In fact, the Induction Phase using just whole foods would deliver approximately 18 grams of fiber per day. The addition of one Advantage bar includes an additional 6-10 grams of fiber per day. Although your letter repeatedly accuses AtkinsFacts.org of making false statements, you give almost no examples. The few examples you do offer are wrong. This accusation about fiber content is no exception.
Based on a nutritional analysis of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (M. Evans & Co., 1999), pp. 257-259, using Nutritionist V., Version 2.0, for Windows 98 (First DataBank, Inc., Hearst Corporation, San Bruno, CA), the fiber content of a "Typical Induction Menu" is 2 grams, exactly as stated in the Constipation section.[843]
You imply, though, that an "independent nutrient analysis," would find that "In fact, the Induction Phase... would deliver approximately 18 grams of fiber per day." There have been three such independent nutrient analyses done--one by Tufts University,[844] another published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition,[845] and a third in the 2004 volume of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.[846] Did they find that "in fact" the Atkins Diet would "deliver 18 grams of fiber a day?"
All three of the published independent nutrient analyses of the Atkins Diet calculated 4 grams of fiber.
Four grams of fiber is only 13% of the minimum recommended by the American College of Gastroenterology,[847] 16% of the FDA's Daily Value[848] and between only 10.5% (for men) and 16% (for women) of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine recommended daily intake.[849] Either way, and by any legitimate recommendation, the induction phase of the Atkins Diet is seriously deficient in fiber.
